In short:

  • Your website is the front door of your business.
  • The first step in any marketing or lead generation plan needs to start with an audit of your website.
  • Your website is the first step to building trust with your customers.

Obviously in this day and age we exchange money for goods and services, right? We also know that people need what we offer. Whether they are our internal clients because we work for someone else or they are outside in the greater world.

Remember no one can give the world exactly what you offer, in the same unique way you offer it.

We know where to find internal clients. They are assigned to us. But where do we find customers in the greater world? Plus once we find them, how do we get them to cross over the threshold and buy?

Lead generation is today’s focus and creating a website is crucial in that process.

61% of marketers say improving SEO and growing their organic presence is their top inbound marketing priority (Hubspot: 2017)

I practice what I call Conscious Marketing. This type of marketing puts the clients needs and results at the forefront of any program, product and marketing plan to sell that program or product. In this case that client is you and the problem you are trying to solve is lead generation.

First you need to find where your clients are hanging out. You could create a place for these clients to hang out. Facebook groups or LinkedIn groups are great places for gathering and learning what problems your customers want to solve.

Also you can now follow hashtags as if they were a person on Instagram. This is a great place to interact with your customers, and learn more about them. Not spam them with direct messages about how to buy your products and services.

Remember marketing is a conversation, and a conversation is a dialogue where you listen before you talk. This conversation builds trust. People buy from businesses they trust.

Where will these prospective customers that you’ve found go to find out more about what you have to offer? Your website.

When your customer comes to your website, it will take them 3-5 seconds to decide whether or not they will stay on your site.

What does that person see when they come to your site?

I can tell you flat out that if your website has more copy than images, can not be viewed on a phone or tablet, or tries to sell before the client has had a chance to see if they want to buy – they are leaving your site by the time 3 seconds are up.

The first step in any marketing plan has to start with an audit of your website. It’s the front door of your business and it will either turn people away or welcome them with open arms.

If you subscribe to the Content Marketing method of growing your business, it’s where your blog or vlog lives. It’s where people will go to learn more about you and to sign up for your email list in order to get your amazing opt in offer. It’s where the sales conversation begins.

Therefore the first step in your lead generation plan should be a website audit.
